The 7,295 crowd included 3,208 Leeds fans. New signings Zoumana Camera and Jody Morris were not included in the squad but Brazilian trialist Rodrigo was brought on after just eleven minutes, as the referee suggested to the Leeds bench they should replace Mark Viduka after his actions had caused the referee to have thoughts of using the red card. That was the only change in a first half of little significance. However, after Matthew Kilgallon was brought into the action in place of Michael Duberry, three minutes into the second half, United rang the changes in the fifty-fourth minute with a triple change as Danny Mills replaced Gary Kelly at Right Back, Eric Bakke replaced David Batty and Stephen McPhail came on for Seth Johnson in midfield. It took Bakke just two minutes to give United the lead as he forced home an Ian Harte corner from the left, before United made more changes a minute later. Frazer Richardson replaced Ian Harte at Left Back, Sebastien Rostoe replaced Nick Barmby in midfield and James Milner replaced Jason Wilcox at Outside Left. Amidst all the changes it was not surprising that confusion would reign and in the fifty-eighth minute Danny Mills was adjudged to have fouled Stephen Capper in the penalty area and Christian Fox levelled the scores from the ensuing penalty. Leeds made two further changes as Paul Okon replaced Rodrigo in the seventy-third minute and Danny Milosevic replaced Nigel Martyn in goal four minutes later, but there was no further change to the score. The York City substitutes were Stephen Brackstone, Craig Turns, Graeme Law, Lee Nogan, Chris Smith, Christian Fox, Darren Edmondson, Jon Parkin, Richard Cooper, Stephen Capper and Fabian Bossy. The referee was Alan Kaye (Wakefield).
